Big-Day Bakes

Big-Day Bakes

Q We've just started planning our wedding cake. What advice can you share to help with the process?
A Toni Adam says: When planning your dream cake, remember it's not about having all the answers from the start. Bakers are here to collaborate with you to bring visions to life. We love a good cake chat, so let's work together as a team to create a perfect bake for your day. Don't forget, the cake cutting is a special moment, so let's ensure it's a showstopper!

Consider whether you're serving the cake as dessert or with the evening buffet; this helps you work out the size you might need to ensure there's enough for loved ones to enjoy while avoiding waste.

When researching companies, keep in mind that cake makers all have their own style. So, look around and draw up a shortlist of your favourites. Book a consultation and ask lots of questions. A good supplier should take the time to answer any concerns or queries.

Most couples opt for a round cake, while square and shaped bakes can be more expensive, so set a realistic budget and let your chosen cake maker know what they can work with upfront. There are many different flavours to choose from, so don't feel you need to stick to 'safe' options such as a classic vanilla sponge.

My biggest piece of advice is to enjoy the process! This is your wedding cake, a symbol of your love and commitment. So, have fun with it, explore different options and remember, it's all about you and your partner. Stay true to yourselves and enjoy every step of the journey.

The sweetest blooms

The sweetest blooms

Q We love flowers and want to incorporate them into our cake. What should we take into consideration?
A Heather Tilstone says: I adore flowers on cakes and advise my couple to consider hand-crafted sugar flowers first. Sugar flowers are perfect for cakes, as they won't wilt, are non-toxic, can be crafted to match your fresh flowers and can be a longlasting reminder of your wedding day. Handmade sugar flowers are a showstopper piece of art and your guests will be wowed by how realistic they can look.

Of course, some couples do like to use fresh flowers too, these can also look wonderful, but it's worth bearing in mind that not all flowers can go on cakes as they may be poisonous, and as they may wilt quickly, it might be worth bringing your cake cutting forward to an earlier time.

Talking things over with your cake designer and florist is your best bet, as they will advise you on what's best for your preferred design and the time of year.
